Welcome to Ælfred’s Lions, a digital Old English resource invented, constructed, edited, and presented by the Old English students at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia.  As we add resources, the site will change, so feel free to come back as often as you like!

Why Old English?

Old English, the language of the Anglo-Saxons, laid the groundwork for the English language that people around the world speak today. Though in appearance it is very different from modern English, it contains so many interesting and distinctive kennings and loan-words that one can’t help but enjoy studying it! The study of Old English provides helpful insight and imagination into what makes our language what it is.

For a comparison of Old English text and pronunciation to that of Middle and Early Modern English, and background information on how Old English developed into what we speak now, please take a look at our Ancestors of English page. Happy reading!
