Amanda Mazurkiewicz: Defy the Odds

I remember the day so clearly,

It’s a day I will never forget.

The sport that I had worked so hard to play

Was suddenly coming to an end.

The world before me spinned,

The sun never seemed to shine.

The darkness began to surround me,

And there was no way I could rise.

I felt that my world had ended,

That my heart had been broken in two.

All I wanted to do was sleep

And pretend that none of it was true.

But then one day I arose,

To a voice before me say,

“You are going to overcome

Everything that gets in your way.”

From this day forward I knew for certain

I was not going to let this defeat me.

I will defy the odds and be the exception,

Because my injury does not define me.
